Abstract

The study about the shipping and trade history in Nusantara is generally centered on the primary trade route and the ports along the route. So are the studies about the spice trade route. The missing thing is the existence of ports around the spice trade hub, especially in Maluku.

The writing describes the growth and development of port cities in the North Sulawesi and the Maluku spice trade trajectory network, especially in the Port of Ternate. The existing port cities—Manado, Gorontalo, Parigi, Moutong, Banggai—did not ship spices. Instead, they transported crops, including foodstuffs, such as rice, corn, sago, and the type of wood used to repair sailing ships.

Keywords: shipping, the spice trade, port city, north coast of Sulawesi.
