Jamu is not new to Indonesians, especially the Javanese. A theory stated that “jamu” is derived from two words ‘Jawa’ [Java] and ‘ngramu’ (which means mixing or gathering), and it can simply be translated into “a potion made by the Javanese” or “a potion from Java”.

It is estimated that Jamu came from the Mataram Kingdom. Illustration of jamu making process shown in various sites, such as archaeological site Liyangan and horse on the Borobudur relief. In addition, the Madhawapura Inscription from the Majapahit period mentioned the particular role of jamu maker, called ‘Acaraki’.

This beneficial drink is identical to the figure of women through the jamu gendong seller. Ngunter, Sukoharja, Central Java is believed to be the jamu tradition center. The women called ‘Mbok Jamu’ also came from this town.

Commonly, the jamu makers are housewives. While doing chores, the housewives usually have a side activity to make and sell the jamu powder. However, as time goes by, jamu is no longer identical to a specific gender, where the modern look of jamu, Acaraki Jamu, is owned by a man.
