Wedang is commonly formulated from various empon-empon (seasonings or spices) from natural ingredients that make it safe for health and improve stamina and immunity. There are various types of wedang, such as wedang jahe, wedang uwuh, wedang secang, wedang blung, wedang coro, wedang pekak, wedang tahu, and many more.

Various types of wedang come from different areas in Nusantara and have their own stories. However, unlike other types of wedang, wedang tahu came from China and was brought to Indonesia at the end of the 19th century. Until today, it has become the typical culinary of Semarang.
