Abstract

The Spice Routes of Bangka and Belitung Islands was a part of the nautical route in Indonesia's history as part of the nautical life of Nusantara in the past when life before and after colonialism in Nusantara had become one of the links between various islands in the western part of Nusantara for Nusantara and foreign traders. They traded spices and non-spices commodities in Nusantara, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, and China. The research on the Spice Routes that crossed the Bangka and Belitung Islands and the role of both islands as the primary seawater route that had become a sea bridge connecting spice traders from Arab, China, India, and Nusantara who sailed crossed and anchored in Bangka at Mentok Port gave a significant meaning to nautical routes in the Bangka and Belitung Islands. The purpose of this research on the Bangka Belitung Spice Routes is to give us an understanding of the contribution of the Spice Routes between Bangka Island and Sumatra Island as proved by the news brought by Chinese traders who said there were shipwrecks and piracy of the ships which sailed around the waters of Bangka and East Sumatra. The method in this study developed findings on the primary sources that discussed Bangka and Belitung from the pre-colonial period to the colonial period on the crucial role of the water route, which provides one of the understandings in the conclusions of this study, such as the use of the Malay language, tin inscription finding, and the existence of Mentok Port which has played a role since the pre-colonial era. The port became a place for traders to berth and dock the ships that carried spices that sailed from Nusantara to the north, such as Southeast Asia, India, China, and Arabia since the past gave us views on the importance of the nautical route of Bangka and Belitung.
