We are familiar with Surabaya and one of its ports that is mentioned in a song. It is Tanjung Perak, the leading port of Surabaya to date. However, before the emergence of the port, there was once a crowded small local port, for it held a significant role in the spice trades of Nusantara and the world.

Surabaya became legendary with the activities of the vessels following its role as a transit port that connected the eastern and the western parts of Indonesia, where Surabaya had a relationship with its neighbouring island, Madura.

At that period, the minimum access of trench to Surabaya encouraged many ships to transit at the nearby strait, Madura. They continued their trip and carried loads by small boats. After loading the goods, they nimbly sailed through the Kalimas River until they reached the main port of Surabaya.

Let’s watch this episode of Jelajah Jalur Rempah for full coverage! The video highlights the role of Kalimas Port, its relationship with Madura, and a significant point of the Spice Routes.
